Crimson's Photos
My joy at taking pictures has become sort of an inside joke with a couple of people I went white water rafting with. On the trip to the Ottawa River I memorized some places that I wanted to stop on the way back and take some pictures and on the way back I would all of a sudden yell, "STOP!!! That was it!!!" and then the driver would have to slam on her breaks and back up so I could jump out and get my shot. We all had great fun though :O)
I am by no means a photographer but I thought I would share some pics I have taken. Someday I hope to get a really good camera and make it more of a hobby, but for now I have my cheapie digital camera which keeps me clicking. It's too bad though, that scanning the ones I took with my old 35mm seems to lose some of the great detail in the ones that made me take the picture in the first place.
2006 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Below are a few pictures I took while on a trip to do community development work in the favellas of Rio. It was an experience of a lifetime and it was wonderful to see the work we did there had a real impact on the youth and community groups we worked with while there. I hope to go back some day to continue the good work of Solidaridad en Marche.
Favella 1 - 2006/08/17 - This was one of the more well off favellas (aka shanty towns) we worked in. Most of our work that day involved taking care of children at a day care.
Favella 2 - 2006/08/28 - This was one of the favellas where we did dental hygeine promotion at the community centre there. The people were so kind, geneous, and proud and made us feel completely welcome.
O Cristo Redentor - 2006/08/20 - On my birthday I walked up Corcovado mountain to see the magnificent 130ft statue of Christ. I am not Christian and in fact believe there is divinity in all things of nature but I cried when I reached the top. The spiritual power emanating from that place was overwhelming. This picture makes it look like a toy but believe me it was tremendously awe inspiring to be there.
Capuchin Monkey - 2006/08/20 - I fed bananas to this little creature as we were going through Tijuca Forest National Park on Corcovado Mountain. He actually took them and peeled them.
Brazil Mountains - 2006/08/16 - This pic is of the mountains around Rio as we decended on the airplane.
Coconut Trees - 2006/08/16 - These trees were right outside my window at the retreat house we stayed at. The house was run by a group of nuns.
Copacabana Beach - 2006/08/16 - The sand and surf of this famous beach were amazingly beautiful. The colours are so rich and vibrant there and it was the first time I had ever been to or even seen the ocean.
Copacabana Beach 2 - 2006/08/16 - Another one of about one hundred photos I took at the beach. During the course of the trip I took over 2500 pictures.
Copacabana Beach 3 - 2006/08/16 - This was just as the sun was starting to set on our first day in Brazil.
Tree in Rio - 2006/08/23 - I loved the pure greeness of this tree which was near Ipanema. There was quite a number of birds in the tree that you can`t see in the picture since they were perched on the outer branches.
Buzios Sunset - 2006/08/25 - We spent a couple of days in Buzios which is a resort town about 2 or 3 hours away from Rio. It was there that I took my first swim in the ocean.
Houston Lights - 2006/08/15 - These are actually the lights of Houston, Texas which was our transfer point before heading to South America. I took this from the plane as we were descending.
Sao Paulo Lights - 2006/08/29 - These city lights are from Sao Paulo which was our transfer point before heading back to North America. I took this from the plane as we were ascending.
2007 Ice Storm - In January 2007, ice storms hit numerous areas across Canada. Below are just a few pictures I took after a display of nature's awesome power.
Ice Storm 1 - 2007/01/18 - In my area the ice storm lasted for three days with the third night being the worst. When dawn broke the next day it was like nature had created a vibrant landscape of ice sculptures out of everything in sight.
Ice Storm 2 - 2007/01/18 - Everything was encased in a delicate layer of ice that was truly beautiful to behold.
Ice Storm 3 - 2007/01/18 - As the sun rose in the sky everything sparkled like a horizon made entirely of diamonds. The brilliance of it was magnificent.
Ice Storm 4 - 2007/01/18 - This one I just found ironic since it is a fire lane sign encased in ice.
Ivy Stairs - 2002/11/16 - This was taken when I was working on a photo project for this web site. I really like the shadows and texture in this one.
Niagara Gorge - 2009/07/12 - Visiting Niagara Falls and went hiking with my nephew down the Niagara Gorge. Photos just don't do justice to the raw beauty of this place.
Yellow Flowers - 2009/06/29 - Saw these while hiking at a Provincial Park. I love how the petals are shaped like hearts.
Farmhouse - 2002/06/09 - This is one of the pictures I took on my way back from the rafting trip where I yelled "Stop!!!"
Barn - 2002/06/09 - On the same property as the farmhouse. I think they were located near Bon Echo. The wood of the barn is very weathered which you can't really see in the scanned pic.
Ottawa River - 2002/06/08 - I took this picture of the Quebec side of the river on the pontoon after our rafting adventure. We had a great barbecue on the pontoon while cruising the river back to the camp site.
Detroit Skyline - 2002/05/23 - I went to a conference in Windsor where our hotel overlooked the Detroit River so I took some pics of Detroit on the opposite bank.
Flowers - 2002/05/23 - These flowers were in one of the stunning gardens that Windsor boasts. I tend to take lots of nature pictures so you won't see many pictures of people up here. Mostly it is because I wouldn't put them up without their permission.
Ambassador Bridge - 2002/05/23 - As part of the conference there was a boat cruise on the Detroit River. The weather was fantastic and I got a lot of pictures from this trip.
Detroit Skyline 2 - 2002/05/23 - This picture I took while walking through some gardens along the river. Windsor has a lot of beautiful gardens, I think this one was called the Dieppe gardens.
